I think of the mundane couch as a stage for contemporary intimacy—a place where the most private acts dissolve into the most public rhythms of daily life. Dinners are eaten, TV is watched, quick intimacies unfold. Things are shared there, but rarely met. Sitting side by side begins to resemble contact, even when nothing truly touches.
Today’s relationships feel like a form of simultaneous solitude. Life moves, time passes, yet emotional encounter is constantly deferred—suspended or replaced by its own illusion. What appears to be a relationship gradually reveals itself as its postponement. Perhaps most unsettling is this: disconnection can convincingly perform itself as intimacy.
